Rock Art

Rock Art

A number of rock art figures and motifs from several petroglyph and pictograph sites in the area are depicted and considered in this permanent exhibit at the Museum.

Ages of the rock art range from about 3000 BC to the late 1800s when the Utes still lived in this area, and motifs show abstract figures and designs as well as naturalistic figures of people and animals.

Archaeological materials recovered from a test pit at one rock art location, the Big Bird site, are included in this display.

Photographs and modern artists' interpretations are combined with archaeologists' and ethnographic interpretation of this rock art for the exhibit.
