PicturePencil on paper of Kit Carson, 1863 by E. A. Burbank. Original from the collection of Bonhams
Recent protests over Confederate statues have sparked removal across the country and not just Confederate statues.  Santa Fe, New Mexico is also re-examining monuments and statues of prominent historical figures including Kit Carson and Don Diego de Vargas.

- Santa Fe mayor call for removal of controversial monuments, and status of Spanish conquistador -- “My belief is that we must take these steps now because they are the right thing to do,” he added. “It is a moment of moral truth, and we’ve been called to do it by our Native American colleagues, friends and family members, and it is long overdue.”

- Statue of Spanish governor removed from New Mexico park
"...other markers were slated to come down as monuments to historical figures were being dismantled across the country.  The statue of Don Diego de Vargas was taken down"... Indigenous advocates "have long criticized some of the markers and other references to the Spanish conquistador."

- Activists protesting controversial statues turn focus to Santa Fe Plaza obelisk
"This racist monument against indigenous peoples has got to go," Three Sisters Collective to demand that the obelisk [for Kit Carson] celebrating violence against 'savage Indian' be removed."
