Saguache Museum's - Summer Events

Memorial Day Weekend 05/24 - The Saguache County Museum and the Hazard House Museum will open with a bang this summer, starting from 8-11am on Sunday, 05/24, morning of Memorial Day Weekend we will host a pancake breakfast in the Otto Mears Park as part of the Saguache County Memorial Day Weekend events.  The Park, which is just 1 block south from the museum, will be abuzz with activities through the day including arts and craft booths and a Sloppy Joe Luncheon at Noon in the Saguache Community Building.  The lunch will feature high-altitude, all-natural beef donated by the Sutherland Ranch.  Across the street from the Park at the Hazard House Museum, Elaine Woodard will again be available to give tours of the historic house, and Virginia Drake’s theatre group will be featuring historical vignettes both inside and on the grounds of the Hazard House throughout the day.  Seat of the Pants String Band will be performing during the afternoon at the in the Museum yard.

The Saguache County Museum itself will be open all day from 9-4pm featuring many new exhibits including:
  • an exhibit of Old Spanish Trail - Bunker Site items,
  • an exhibit of vintage cameras that includes a 1800s portrait camera owned by photographer O.T. Davis, reported to have been the first portrait camera in the County.
  • and a new exhibit of antique bottles, jars and spoons.  

We will also have many new titles in our bookshop, and new items in our giftshop.  The Museum has a newly renovated Native-American/Spanish Room, our War Memorial exhibit, and a new addition to our collection of a Gotthelf Player Piano.  This is only the beginning of what there is to see and experience so be sure you spend Memorial Day Weekend in Saguache, to get in on all the fun.  Hope to see you there!

Seasonal Hours:  Starting Sunday, 05/24 the Saguache County Museum will be open from 9-4pm, every day of the week, Sunday – Saturday through mid-September.

Saturday, July 4th - On Saturday, July 4th, we will have another pancake breakfast in the Museum yard, serving pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee.  We will also have a book sale with many interesting subject and titles.  And of course our own collectible historical cookbook, Collectible Cookery – From Pioneer to Present will be on sale.

Saturday, July 25th - we will be participating in the 4th annual citywide Hollyhock Festival that celebrates the Saguache town flower the hollyhock.  The festival has garden tours, a flower art contest, kids activities, food, fun and flowers for the whole family.  Stay tuned for a full list of this year’s events.

Saturday, August 2nd – The Saguache County Museum will again join in with the 6th Annual Saguache Art Festival.  This is a citywide event; last year our Photography Contest had 62 entries.

September 4th and 5th - The 5th Annual International Pow Wow will be held at Otto Mears Park on Friday and Saturday, September 4th and 5th.  The Saguache Museum will host our ever-popular pancake breakfast in the Museum’s yard, and a booth with many books, t-shirts with exclusive designs by Wade Collins and other items. 

September 19th – The Museum will also have a booth at the 22nd Annual Saguache Fall Festival and Quilt Show, which will be held in Otto Mears Park, opening with our traditional pancake breakfast.  Don’t miss these family-friendly events.
