Murals Tour of Conejos County

The following is a mural tour developed, designed and printed by the Conejos County Tourism that includes the towns of Manassa, La Jara, Guadalupe, Antonito, Romeo.
"It's been said that Conejos County is an outdoor Art Gallery displaying larger than life murals set against the beauty that only Mother Nature can create.

The "Mural of Conejos County Driving [Walking] Tour" is a fascinating trip through some of the most beautiful pastoral landscapes in the Rocky Mountains. along the way, the murals engage in the ages old local tradition of story-telling depicting tales of settlement, folklore, faith, scenic beauty and everyday rural life. From prehistoric lore of the Feathered Serpent of the Rio Grande to Bronco Busting at the 100+ year old Manassa rodeo, and a herd of thundering hooves crossing the high desert valley...we have stories to tell.

Like the rock art of prehistoric Native Americans scattered across the San Luis Valley, the mural communicate details of our lives, our past and our future.  As a long held artistic traditiion in Conejos County you'll find treasured murals splashed across walls in businesses, churches, school and even tucked inside private homes.
The Murals of Conejos County Driving Tour highlights 20 murals.  85% of the murals included in this collection were created by Fred Haberlein, also known as "Lightning Heart." Growing up in the Conejos Canyon near the San Juan Wilderness Area, Lightning Heart, was greatly influenced by nature and wildlife as is evident in his work.  He is one of America's most prolific muralists, with more than 129 murals to his name and counting.  Other artists featured in this collection include local artists Josie Perea, Regina Gallegos, Roger Briones and Lauren Karlskin. For more information about the artists and their works, as well as other murals in the local area, please go to our [the Conejos County Tourism] website at www.conejosvacation.com

As you travel through the pastoral settings and quaint small town communities of Conejos County unwind, relax and enjoy our company. We're glad you're here."  All the above information is from the printed brochure produced by the Conejos County Tourism.
