Dia de Los Muertos
While the actual "Day of the Dead" celebration is on November 1st, the exhibit is on display from late October through early December each year. The 3rd Annual Dia de los Muertos exhibit is planned for Sunday, October 29, 2001.
Dias de los Muertos is a Mexican-based observance corresponding with All Saints and All Souls Days, November 1st and 2nd on the Catholic calendar. This year again, the San Luis Museum is calling for entries from the community for ofrendas to honor deceased individuals. Artists are also encouraged to enter ofrenda installations.
In past years, ofrendas have been offered to local individuals, especially youth, who have died and whos families wish to remember them in a special way. There have also been ofrendas to famous people such as Ritchie Valens, the Chicano Rock singer of the late 1950s, and international Tex-Mex singing sensation Selena.
In addition, there will be a "community ofrenda" in which anyone can contribute a photo or memento of a loved one. Community members are encouraged to participate in this highly creative process for honoring and grieving those who have died.
As in the past, many volunteers will be needed to make paper flowers and other ofrenda offerings. For the exhibit reception, volunteers will be needed to bake Pan de Muerto and help prepare chocolate, bizcochitos, and other traditional foods.
If you are interested in helping with this exhibit, please call Juanita Gurule at 719-672-3611. It is not too early to start planning your exhibit if you intend to participate.
