View from the 2nd Floor of the Luther Bean Museum
|
Antiques donated to the college by Beryl and
Charles Woodard are a large part of the first floor. There are
many unique pieces in this collection, including some Louis XV
pieces that are very rare. Part of the collection is a series
of figurines of white porcelain and gold called the "Dance of the
Hours." The Woodards traveled extensively, collecting
porcelains in Europe and ivory and jade carvings from Asia.
Another unique piece in the room is the pump
organ or concertina. There is also a beautiful collection of
cut glass crystal and an Edison record player. Included in the
collection is a chess set of hand-carved ivory and a dining table
set for an elegant dinner with Havelin china and silver.
The
museum has a bronze sculpture by Alan Howser, "The Offering of the
Great Spirit." He is one of America's finest Indian
artists.
Luther
Bean also has a painting by Joseph Henry Sharp
who is the father of the Taos School of Art and was
the first artist to visit Taos in the late 1800s.
